Feminine hygiene and care products still seem like a taboo topic of discussion even in the 21st century. The issues associated with these specific products are rarely ever shed light upon which is in all honesty, quite ignorant. Unfortunately, not more than a third of the population is truly aware of the dangers we women are exposed to due to the toxic chemicals present in most of these personal cleaning products.
Personal care products are designed to be in constant contact with your skin. The skin is a delicate and permeable organ that is highly susceptible to any adverse reactions or infections owing to the presence of these harmful chemicals. Some of these include carcinogens, reproductive toxins, allergens and endocrine disruptors. Many might be confused about the source of these. Tampons have dioxin, furans and pesticide residues. Sanitary pads, in addition to the previously mentioned chemicals, also contain adhesive chemicals such as methyldibromo glutaronitrile. Wipes and washes are known to contain a wide array of cancer causing parabens and chemicals. Yes, these are big complicated words and frankly, a layman would have no idea about how potentially dangerous these so-called self-care products are. Let us guide you through some of them.
Dioxins and Furans are amongst the most toxic chemicals discovered by mankind. They are certified cancer causing chemicals with other harmful effects as well such as delayed neurodevelopmental and neurobehavioral effects in children owing to prolonged exposure, and an increased risk of diabetes in adults. Dioxins and Furans are found in both tampons and sanitary napkins.
2) Contact Allergies and Asthma
Methyldibromo glutaronite has tested positive for certain contact allergies that lead to an allergic rash in many sanitary napkin users. Parabens found in washes and wipes are known to cause premature aging, hormonal imbalances, and breast cancer. There also have been various reports regarding users developing an allergic rash as well as asthma.
3) Endocrine Disruption
Endocrine disruption is another known aftermath of personal hygiene product use. This particular result can range from negligible changes to serious hormonal imbalances leading to developmental malformations in future generations or infertility.
4) Other Health Related Issues
Douches include fragrance chemicals and spermicide thus, they have been associated with various health-related problems such as yeast infections, sexually transmitted diseases, ectopic pregnancies, bacterial vaginosis, infertility, etc.
5) Toxic Shock Syndrome
An unknown monster after effect that most of us need to keep an eye out for is Toxic Shock Syndrome. This is characterized by sharp shooting fever, vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, rashes, muscle pain, and redness. It is a potentially life-threatening condition so prevention is truly better than cure. If you notice any of these symptoms, contact your physician or OB/GYN as soon as possible.
Carolyn Maloney made commendable congressional efforts to pass the Robin Danielson Feminine Hygiene Product Safety Act, which is a bill instigating research on the consequences of the ingredients present in feminine care products, and the impact they have on women’s health. Do not sit on these issues, ladies. For some the affect is immediate, for others the signs gradually become apparent over time, and still others have symptoms but may think it’s just “normal”. Do your research before getting on board. We deserve to know what our bodies are exposed to every day. To learn more click here.
